This guide is a practical planning reference for foreign patients. It is not medical, legal, or technical advice, and hospital digital systems can change without notice.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for foreign patients who may need to use:
- a hospital official app
- a WeChat official account
- a WeChat mini program
- a self-service kiosk
- an online queue or report system
- a mobile payment workflow connected to the hospital
It is especially relevant if you do not have a Chinese ID card or a Chinese mobile number.
What to prepare before travel
Before your hospital visit:
- install WeChat and Alipay
- make sure your phone can receive SMS codes in China
- prepare your passport information exactly as written
- save your Chinese local address if available
- keep a scan or photo of your passport identity page
- ask whether the hospital uses an app, mini program, or manual counter for foreign patients
- prepare a backup plan if the digital route fails
Some hospitals can register foreign patients through manual counters even when the app does not accept passport details. Others may still use the app for payment, queue status, or reports after registration.
What usually happens in China
Digital hospital systems may be used for:
- booking appointments
- creating a patient card or account
- checking queue status
- paying for registration or tests
- viewing lab or imaging reports
- receiving follow-up notices
The same hospital may use different workflows for different departments. International departments may have a more manual or concierge-style process, while standard outpatient clinics may rely more on apps and kiosks.
Common friction points
Foreign patients often face:
- passport fields that do not fit the form
- name order mismatch
- SMS verification failures
- no local phone number
- app pages only in Chinese
- payment tied to the app workflow
- report access blocked by identity matching
- family member accounts mixed with patient accounts
Do not assume the app is impossible to use, but also do not assume it will work smoothly.
Practical checklist
Before the first visit, ask:
- Can foreign passport holders register through the app?
- Is manual registration available?
- Does the hospital require a local mobile number?
- Can reports be printed at the hospital if online access fails?
- Can payment be completed at a cashier window?
- Is there an international department or service desk?
- What screenshots or QR codes should I save?
During the visit, keep your passport, appointment confirmation, payment records, and queue number together. If a staff member helps you create an account, confirm which phone number and name format were used.
